Intumescent Paint — Fire-Protective Coatings

Intumescent paint is a fire-protective coating that expands 50–200 times its thickness when exposed to heat, forming an insulating char layer that protects the substrate from reaching critical failure temperatures. It is required by code for exposed structural steel in many commercial and multifamily applications.

FAQ

Required for exposed structural steel in most commercial buildings, restaurants, multifamily residential, and any building type where building code requires fire-rated construction but the structural steel is exposed.
Thin-film (epoxy-based) provides ratings up to 2 hours and produces a smoother finish. Thick-film (cementitious) can achieve 3+ hour ratings but has a rougher texture.
