What Mass Save® actually covers

Mass Save® is a joint program of Massachusetts electric and gas utilities. It rebates residential weatherization measures that have been recommended by a no-cost Home Energy Assessment or scoped by a Direct Weatherization Independent Installation Contractor.

What's rebatable:

  • Air sealing — attic-plane, rim joists, top plates, chases. Typically covered at 100% in the first visit for small leaks, then on the full project estimate.
  • Attic insulation — blown cellulose, fiberglass, or rigid foam to current R-value targets.
  • Wall insulation — dense-pack cellulose, injected fiberglass, or drill-and-fill.
  • Basement / rim-joist insulation — rigid foam board or dense-pack.
  • Pre-weatherization barrier mitigation — knob-and-tube replacement, vermiculite removal, asbestos abatement.
Important: Mass Save® does not rebate spray foam insulation as a standalone measure. If spray foam is the right product for your home (cathedral ceilings, rim joists, underside of roof deck), it's a premium out-of-pocket upgrade — we often perform it alongside rebated air sealing and cellulose in the same job.

How it works with Smooth

  • We schedule your Mass Save® Home Energy Assessment (no cost), or for direct weatherization, we scope it ourselves as an aligned contractor.
  • You get an itemized proposal showing what's rebated (75% off) and what's out-of-pocket.
  • We complete the work, submit the paperwork, and you pay only the 25% residual on rebated items plus any non-rebated upgrades.
  • Optional: finance your portion at 0% through the HEAT Loan (up to $25,000, 3–7 year term by income tier).

What changed in 2026

The federal Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit expired on December 31, 2025, and was not renewed. For 2026 projects there is no federal tax credit for insulation — Mass Save® is the primary Massachusetts incentive. The HEAT Loan remains at 0% APR.
