Efficiency Maine — how it works

Efficiency Maine is an independent state agency (not a utility program). It rebates energy-efficiency measures for every Maine electricity customer. The program is funded by a system benefits charge on Maine electric and gas bills — you've already been paying in.

For insulation and air sealing:

  • All incomes: 80% of qualifying insulation + air sealing, base tier.
  • Moderate income: up to $6,000 (adjusted gross ≤ $70K single / $100K married).
  • Low income: up to $8,000 (HEAP/SNAP/TANF/MaineCare recipients).
  • Lifetime cap: $9,600 per building.
  • Eligible buildings: 1–4 unit residential, owner-occupied primary residence, existing construction (not new builds or additions).

How it works with Smooth

  • We scope your project as an Efficiency Maine Registered Vendor — no separate audit required in most cases.
  • Our quote shows the Efficiency Maine rebate already deducted. You pay the net amount.
  • We file the paperwork directly with Efficiency Maine and wait out the 6-week processing window ourselves.
  • You never see a reimbursement check — the rebate is applied up front.
Important: Efficiency Maine rebates standard weatherization measures — 2" exterior rigid foam or dense-packed/foam-filled cavities, attic and basement insulation, air sealing. Spray foam specifically is not a rebated measure; it's a premium out-of-pocket upgrade that we often combine with rebated measures at rim joists, cathedral ceilings, and crawl spaces.

Energy Upgrade Bundle

Efficiency Maine requires an "Energy Upgrade Bundle" (air sealing + basic weatherization measures) before issuing insulation rebates, unless your home was previously weatherized. For most homes, this is the first visit — we scope both the bundle and the insulation in one proposal.

What changed in 2026

Federal Section 25C tax credits expired December 31, 2025 — no federal credit is available for 2026 insulation work. Efficiency Maine rebates are unaffected and remain the primary Maine incentive.
